PDF Splitter

report-a4-3pages.pdf has three A4 pages, each 595.28 points wide. Typing each builds a zip of three PDFs, page-1.pdf, page-2.pdf and page-3.pdf, and the zip is 2.9 KB. Each PDF inside has exactly one page. The zip is stored, not re-compressed as images, so the page content is the copy pdf-lib made.

Typing 1,3 builds one PDF of two pages, both still 595.28 points wide, 1.1 KB. The order is the order you typed. 3,1 would put the old third page first. The parser accepts a single page, a comma list, and a range such as 2-3. A token that is not a number, or a page past the end, stops the run with the page count in the message. You do not get a partial file.

Bookmarks, links and form fields are not copied. pdf-lib's page copy keeps the content stream and the resources that page needs. It does not rebuild an outline. If the outline was why you were splitting, you will be adding it back in a full PDF app. For a report you want to mail as separate chapters, the page copy is the part that matters.

A password-protected PDF is refused. The message says pdf-lib cannot remove a password. There is no upload step that sends it to a service which might. The bytes stay in the tab.

each is the right value when every page should be its own file. A range is the right value when you want pages 1 and 3 together and page 2 left out. The extract tool, when you use it, is the range case under a clearer name. This page keeps both because "split" in the keyword is what people type, and the box shows the two shapes.

The merge tool does the opposite: several PDFs become one, with an optional range per file. Split then merge is a clumsy way to reorder. The reorder page, once you are on it, lists the new order in one box. For this three-page report the zip entries are named page-1.pdf, page-2.pdf and page-3.pdf.

page-1.pdf, page-2.pdf and page-3.pdf are the zip names for the three-page A4 report. A range of 1,3 leaves page 2 out and keeps the typed order, both pages still 595.28 points wide. The 2.9 KB zip and the 1.1 KB PDF are the two shapes of the same source file.

Put files back together with PDF merge. A JPEG of one page is PDF to JPG.

What does 1,3 keep?

Two pages, both 595.28 points wide, in the typed order. The file is 1.1 KB. Page 2 is absent.

Are form fields copied?

No. pdf-lib copies the page content. The outline is not rebuilt.

What if the range says page 9?

The run stops and the message tells you the file has 3 pages. No partial download.

Is the zip a set of pictures?

No. The pages are still PDF content streams, not JPEGs.

Can a password-protected report be split?

No. The splitter stops before it writes the zip.
