Strikethrough Text Generator

Strikethrough text is written two ways. A combining mark, U+0336, is placed after every character except spaces, so Hello carries a line through each letter if the font draws the mark. The other row wraps the same word in double tildes, which is the Markdown and Discord convention.

New

The combining strike may be invisible in some fonts. The tilde row is ordinary characters.

Some fonts skip the combining mark. The tilde row cannot disappear that way, because it is ordinary characters.

How to use

  1. Type a short line.
  2. Press Strike. If the struck row has no visible line, copy the tilde row.
  3. Reset restores Hello.

Formula / how it works

The combining mark. U+0336 is a long stroke overlay. It does not replace the letter. It follows it. Spaces are left alone so words stay separated. Hello becomes five letters each followed by the mark. Hi becomes two. A font that has no glyph for the mark shows the letter and nothing else, which looks like the tool failed. It did not. The markdown row is the fallback you can see everywhere: two tildes, the word, two tildes. ~~Hello~~ and ~~Hi~~.

Where tildes work. Discord and many Markdown renderers turn the tildes into a strike and hide the tildes. A plain text field shows the tildes. That is the field being plain, not the row being wrong. Do not stack the combining mark and the tildes unless you want both. Pick one row.

Limits. 200 characters. No animation. The mark is the same on every letter. There is no “wavy” strike. If you need a line in a document you control, use the editor’s strike command, which stores a style rather than a combining character.

Test the struck row on the device that will display it. A laptop that drops the mark will still show the tilde row. Copy that row into chat. Keep the struck row for a note where you have already seen the line draw. The letters are unchanged in both rows. A search for Hello will not find the combining form as the plain word, and it will not find the tilde form either, because of the extra characters.

A struck price in a shop window is a style, and a plain-text caption cannot store that style. The two rows are the workarounds. The combining mark is one character per letter plus the mark, so a selection can be fiddly: backspace may delete the mark and leave the letter, or delete both, depending on the editor. The tilde row deletes cleanly because every character is visible. If you are writing for a renderer that understands tildes, use that row and ignore the struck row. If you are writing for a renderer that shows every character, look at the struck row on that renderer before you publish. A phone and a laptop can disagree. The word itself is the same. Only the decoration differs. Do not strike a word to hide it. The letters remain readable in both rows.

Hello and Hi are short so you can see every mark. A longer phrase still places the mark after each letter and leaves each space alone, so the gaps between words stay gaps. Count the letters if you are checking a paste: the markdown row adds four tildes, two on each side, and the struck row adds one mark per non-space character. Those counts are how you tell the rows apart in a hex dump if the font made them look the same.

Worked examples

Hello, both ways

Inputs: Text: Hello

Leave the text as Hello and press Strike. The markdown row is ~~Hello~~.

Result: Struck: H̶e̶l̶l̶o̶ Markdown: ~~Hello~~ The struck row adds U+0336 after each character except spaces. Some fonts skip that mark. The markdown row is two tildes on each side and always uses ordinary letters.

Hi, two letters

Inputs: Text: Hi

Change the text to Hi and press Strike. The markdown row is ~~Hi~~.

Result: Struck: H̶i̶ Markdown: ~~Hi~~ The struck row adds U+0336 after each character except spaces. Some fonts skip that mark. The markdown row is two tildes on each side and always uses ordinary letters.

Use cases

  • A chat strike when the font drops the combining mark.
  • Seeing the mark on a machine that has it.
  • Keeping ordinary letters in the tilde row.
  • A short word, not a paragraph.

Tips & limitations

  • Copy the tilde row if you see no line.
  • Do not use both rows at once.
  • Spaces are not struck.
  • Use an editor’s strike command in a document you control.

FAQ

Why is there no line on the struck row?

The font has no glyph for U+0336. The tilde row is the visible fallback.

What do the tildes mean?

In Markdown and Discord they request a strike. In a plain field they stay as tildes.

Are spaces struck?

No. Spaces stay spaces so the words remain separated.

Does the letter change?

No. The mark is added after it, or tildes are wrapped around the whole word.

Can I strike a paragraph?

Up to 200 characters. Longer text is refused.

Is the text uploaded?

No. Both rows are built in the browser.

Runs entirely in your browser; your text is not uploaded. Counts and scores are heuristics, so review the output before you publish it.
