Some fonts do not draw the combining mark. The tag row cannot vanish that way. A browser underlines it. A plain field shows the tag.
How to use
- Type a short line.
- Press Underline. If the marked row has no line, copy the tag row.
- Reset restores Hello.
Formula / how it works
The mark. U+0332 sits under the character it follows. Spaces are skipped so words stay separated. A font without the mark shows the plain letter. That is a missing glyph, not a skipped letter. The tag row is <u> and the word and </u>. It is what an HTML page underlines. It is noise in a plain chat. Pick the row the destination understands. Do not apply both unless you want a tag around already-marked letters.
Length. Two hundred characters on the input. The tag adds seven characters around the word. The marked row adds one mark per non-space. Hi is the short check: two letters, one word, the tag <u>Hi</u>. Compare it with Hello if you are counting marks.
Hello gains U+0332 after each letter. Hi does the same for two letters. Spaces are skipped so the gap stays a gap. A font that skips the mark shows plain Hello. The HTML row is <u>Hello</u>, which a browser will underline and a plain field will show with the tag. Pick the row the destination understands. Do not wrap the combining row in the tag as well unless you want both. The tag is not a combining mark. It is five extra characters plus the word. Two hundred characters is the cap on the word, not on the tagged result.
Hello is five marks. Hi is two. The tag row grows by the same seven characters either way, because the tag does not depend on the length except that the word sits in the middle. Use Hello when you want to see a run of marks. Use Hi when you want the shortest tag. A font test is Hello on the machine that will display the note. If the line is missing, switch rows. Do not file a bug against the mark. The character is U+0332 whether or not a glyph is drawn. You can confirm that in the hex tool by encoding the underlined line, which will show the bytes of the mark after each letter. That is the proof the mark was inserted.
Hello shows a run of marks. Hi shows the shortest tag. Use both when you are deciding which row a destination can show. A chat that prints the tag as text wants the combining row, and only if the font draws it. A page you control wants the tag, and you should check that the site allows a u element. If it strips the tag, you are back to plain letters. The mark is the other attempt. Test it. Do not assume a phone and a desktop agree. Hello is the longer mark run. Hi is the shorter tag.
Worked examples
Hello, both rows
Inputs: Text: Hello
Leave the text as Hello and press Underline. The tag row is <u>Hello</u>.
Result: Underlined: H̲e̲l̲l̲o̲
Markdown: <u>Hello</u>
The first row adds U+0332 after each character except spaces. Some fonts skip that mark. The second row is an HTML underline tag around ordinary letters.
Hi, two letters
Inputs: Text: Hi
Change the text to Hi and press Underline. The tag row is <u>Hi</u>.
Result: Underlined: H̲i̲
Markdown: <u>Hi</u>

Tips & limitations
- Copy the tag row if you see no line.
- Spaces are not underlined.
- Do not stack the mark and the tag unless you mean both.
- Two hundred characters is the cap.
FAQ
Why is there no line under the word?
The font has no glyph for U+0332. Use the HTML tag row.
What does the tag row do in a browser?
A page that allows the u tag underlines the word. A plain field shows the tag as text.
Are spaces underlined?
No. The mark is not added after a space.
Does the letter change?
No. The mark follows it, or the tag wraps the whole word.
Can I underline a paragraph?
Up to 200 characters.
Is the text uploaded?
No. Both rows are built in the browser.
Runs entirely in your browser; your text is not uploaded. Counts and scores are heuristics, so review the output before you publish it.
