Vertical Text Generator

Vertical text puts every character on its own line. Hi is H, then i, and the count is 2. A space becomes a blank line because a space is a character.

New

This is not the word stack. Hello there is many lines here, including a blank line, and two lines on the stacked-text page. The letters stay ordinary.

How to use

  1. Type up to 80 characters.
  2. Press Stack letters. A blank line is a space you typed.
  3. Reset restores Hi.

Formula / how it works

One character, one line. The string is spread with a newline between code units as JavaScript iterates them. Hi is two lines. A space between words is its own line, and that line looks empty. If you did not want the blank, delete the space. The count includes the space. Hello there on this page is not two lines. The stacked text generator is the word split. Use that when the unit is a word. Use this when the unit is a letter. Ordinary letters only, so a font cannot turn the result into boxes unless you typed a character it already could not draw.

The label. The result starts with Vertical. Copy from the first letter if the destination is a sign. Include the label if you are showing how the tool works. Eighty characters is the cap because a letter stack of a paragraph cannot be read.

Hi becomes H then i, two lines, count 2. A space becomes a blank line because a space is a character and every character gets a line. That blank line is easy to miss. If you did not want it, do not type the space. This is the letter stack. The stacked-text page is the word stack. They are easy to confuse and the results are not the same. Hello there on this page is many lines including a blank where the space was. On the word page it is two lines. Eighty characters is the cap because a letter stack of a paragraph is unreadable. Copy from the first letter if you do not want the Vertical label.

Hi is the smallest interesting case: two lines, no blank. Wow adds a third letter and still no blank. A space is the case that surprises people, and it is documented so a blank line is not a bug report. If you are making a sign, type the letters without spaces and let the line breaks do the separation. If you are demonstrating the space rule, type one space on purpose and point at the empty line. The count will be one higher than the letters. That is the demonstration. Eighty characters is enough for a short sign and too many for a paragraph. A paragraph belongs on the word stack, where each word remains readable.

Hi and Wow are the two samples because one has two letters and the other has three, and neither has a space. Add a space only when you want to show the blank line. The count will include it. A sign should not include it. Delete the space, press the button again, and copy from the first letter. The label Vertical is not part of the sign. Eighty characters is a long sign. Most uses are a single word. A paragraph is the wrong input for a letter stack. Hi and Wow have no blank line because neither sample contains a space character at all. A blank line would mean you had typed a space.
