PDF Page Numbers

The three-page A4 report receives the digits 1, 2 and 3. The two-page Letter invoice receives 1 and 2. Helvetica, 12 points, centred, 24 points above the bottom edge. The colour is a near-black. The number is a text operator, so a reader can search for it. It is not a picture of a digit.

New

Numbers sit 24 points above the bottom edge. An existing footer is not cleared, so a number can overlap it. A password-protected PDF is refused.

How to use

  1. Number the three-page A4 report so the digits are 1, 2 and 3.
  2. Number the two-page Letter invoice so the digits are 1 and 2.
  3. Look at the bottom centre. A footer that was already there is not cleared.

Formula / how it works

The three-page A4 report receives the digits 1, 2 and 3. The two-page Letter invoice receives 1 and 2. Helvetica, 12 points, centred, 24 points above the bottom edge. The colour is a near-black. The number is a text operator, so a reader can search for it. It is not a picture of a digit.

Nothing is erased first. If the page already had a footer, the new number sits on top of it. Move your footer, or crop later, if they collide. The sample reports are mostly empty at the bottom, so the digit has white around it. A dense slide will not.

Every page is numbered. There is no "start at 5" and no "skip the cover". If you need the cover unnumbered, delete it, number the rest, and put the cover back with the merge tool. Roman numerals are not drawn. The digit is the Arabic page index in this file, starting at 1 for the first page of this file, not the printed folio of a book. A password stops the draw.

The A4 report is marked 1, 2 and 3. The Letter invoice is marked 1 and 2. Helvetica at 12 points sits centred, 24 points above the bottom edge. The digit is a text operator, so it can be searched. An existing footer is not wiped first, and the samples are empty enough at the bottom that the digit has room. Roman numerals are not drawn. A cover you want left blank has to be merged back on afterwards.

There is no start-at box. A file of three pages is always 1, 2, 3 even if those pages were pages 10, 11 and 12 of a longer work. Put the longer work together first if the digits must match the book. The 12 point size is fixed. A page that is only 40 points tall will still receive the digit at y 24, which may sit in the middle of that tiny page. The A4 and Letter samples have room. The digit colour is near-black, not the grey used by the watermark. On the A4 sample the three digits are 1, 2 and 3. On the Letter sample they are 1 and 2, and both sit 24 points up from the edge.

Search the A4 download for the digit 2 and you are searching a text operator, not a photo of a digit. The invoice download uses 1 and 2 on Letter pages. Neither file started with a footer, so the new digit has empty page around it.

A grey word across the page is PDF watermark. Joining a cover back on is PDF merge.

Use cases

  • Adding a searchable Helvetica digit to a sparse report.
  • Numbering a two-page invoice from 1.
  • Seeing that the index starts at 1 for this file, not at a book folio.
  • Refusing Roman numerals rather than faking them.

Tips & limitations

  • 12 point Helvetica, 24 points up, centred.
  • The digit is text, not a picture.
  • Skip a cover by numbering the body and merging the cover back.
  • A dense footer will collide. Move the footer first.

FAQ

What digits does the three-page report get?

1, 2 and 3, in Helvetica, centred, 24 points above the bottom.

What digits does the invoice get?

1 and 2. The count follows the file, not a printed book folio.

Is an old footer erased?

No. The new digit is drawn on top.

Can the cover stay blank?

Not in one press. Number the other pages, then merge the cover in front.

Are the digits searchable?

Yes. They are text operators, not a bitmap of a number.

Does a password get numbered?

No. The draw stops.

The digits 1, 2, 3 belong to report-a4-3pages.pdf. A file that already had a footer may hide them.
