Text of Length Generator

Text of a chosen length is made by repeating a snippet and cutting it. abc asked to 10 characters is abcabcabca. The result line is exactly that long. There is no ellipsis and no padding character.

New

The length is JavaScript’s string length. An emoji can count as two. Use basic letters when the number must match what you see.

How to use

  1. Type a snippet and a length from 1 to 500.
  2. Press Make. The character count should match the length you asked.
  3. Reset restores abc and 10.

Formula / how it works

Repeat, then cut. The snippet is appended until the string is at least the length, then sliced. abc to 10 needs four copies and a cut of the last two letters, leaving abcabcabca. abc to 4 is abca, the start of the same idea. A snippet longer than the length is simply cut. You do not get an error. The length line and the character line are the check: they should agree. Five hundred is the maximum. One returns the first character of the snippet.

What it will not write. It does not invent words to fill the length. A field that wants a sentence of 100 characters will get a stutter of your snippet, which is honest and ugly. Use it for a test string, a placeholder of exact size, or a pattern. The repeat text generator copies whole snippets and does not cut. Use that when every copy must be whole.

The snippet abc asked to length 10 becomes abcabcabca. The cut is exact. There is no padding character and no ellipsis. If you ask for 4 you get abca, the first four of a repeat that would have been longer. The length is characters, using JavaScript string length, so an emoji may count as two. Keep the snippet in basic letters when you need the count to match what you see. Five hundred is the maximum so a request cannot build a huge page. One is the minimum, which returns the first character. Use this when a field demands an exact size and you have a pattern to fill it. Do not use it to invent a sentence of that length. It will not write new words. It only repeats and cuts.

abcabcabca is the whole story of the 10-character case. Count it on your fingers if you do not trust the character line. Ten letters, ending in a, because the fourth copy of abc contributes only a. abca is the four-character case, ending in a for the same reason. If a form rejects the string, the form is enforcing a different limit than the one you typed. Change the length and press Make again. The box does not remake the string while you edit. A snippet of one character repeated to 10 is that character ten times. That is a useful test of a field that claims to allow 10 and then trims. Paste the result and see what remains.

Count abcabcabca on paper if the character line feels abstract. Ten letters, three full copies and a leftover a. The four-character cut abca is the same rule with an earlier stop. A form that says it accepts 10 and then stores 9 is the form, not this page. Paste the result and compare. The snippet stays in the box so you can press Make again after you change the length. Nothing is remembered between visits except what you leave typed. Press Make after every change to the length.
