Putting up a new fence or replacing tired old panels? Our free Fence Calculator works out how many fence panels, posts and bags of post mix you need from the total length of your run — so you can price the job accurately before you start digging.
Standard UK fence panels are 1.83 m (6 ft) wide. Allow one bag of post mix per post for a 600 mm deep hole.

FAQs
How many fence panels do I need?
Divide the total fence length by the panel width and round up. For a 10 m run with standard 1.83 m panels, you need 6 panels. The calculator above does the maths for you.
How far apart should fence posts be?
Posts are normally spaced to match the panel width — 1.83 m centre to centre for standard panels — so each panel sits neatly between two posts.
How deep should fence posts be buried?
Bury posts to about 600 mm deep (roughly a third of a 1.8 m post) and set them in concrete or post mix for a sturdy, long-lasting fence.
How much concrete do I need per fence post?
One 20 kg bag of post mix per post is enough for a standard 600 mm deep hole. In soft or sandy soil, allow a little extra for a wider hole.
Should I include gates in the measurement?
Measure the full run, then subtract the gate width from the total length — gates need their own posts and are bought separately from panels.
