FAQs

How much extra flooring should I order?

Order 10% extra for a straightforward rectangular room, or 15% if you are laying boards diagonally or the room has alcoves and awkward corners. Offcuts from one row can often start the next, but some waste is unavoidable.

How do I measure an L-shaped room?

Split the room into two rectangles, measure each separately, and add the two areas together. Then enter the total as a single room, or run the calculator twice and combine the results.

Does this calculator work for tiles too?

Yes. The area and wastage maths is the same for tiles — just divide the order quantity by the coverage per box to find how many boxes to buy, rounding up.

What is the perimeter figure for?

The perimeter is the total length around the room, which tells you how much skirting board to buy. Remember to subtract door openings and add a little extra for mitred cuts.

Should I measure wall to wall?

Yes, measure the full wall-to-wall dimensions. Flooring runs underneath skirting boards, so the finished floor area is the whole room minus any large fixed units such as kitchen islands.
